In this topic, students will:
use place value and models to subtract one-digit numbers
use place value and models to subtract two-digit numbers
subtract using place value and partial differences
break apart two-digit numbers to make it easier to subtract
subtract two-digit numbers using a variety of subtraction strategies
use models and equations to solve word problems
Vocabulary:
Partial Differences - When you subtract numbers, the difference of one of the place values is called a partial difference.
At-home Practice:
Supplies:
deck of cards (remove face cards)
paper and pencil
Each player turns over two cards to make a two-digit number. Each player subtracts the numbers to find the difference (paper may be used). (ex. Player 1 draws a 8 and 5 to make 85. Player 2 draws a 3 and 7 to make 37. Players will subtract 85 and 37 to find the difference.) Compare answers. If each player is correct they win their cards. If one player is incorrect the other player wins all of the cards. If both players are incorrect no one wins the cards. Continue playing until the cards are gone. The person with the most cards wins the game.
