In this topic, students will:
add by counting on from a number
use doubles and near doubles to solve problems
use a ten-frame to solve addition facts within 5 and 10
use the same addends to write two different equations with the same sum
count back to solve subtraction problems
use addition facts to 10 to solve subtraction problems
solve word problems by drawing pictures and writing equations
Vocabulary:
Number line - a line that shows numbers in order from left to right.
Doubles fact - an addition fact where one addend is the same as the other addend
Near doubles fact - an addition fact where one addend is 1 or 2 more than the other addend
Count back - start at the larger number and count down to subtract
At-home Practice:
Supplies:
deck of cards (Remove all face cards)
Turn over one card. The first player to “double” that number wins the card. (ex. a 4 is turned over, the players would add 4+4 and call out 8). Play continues until all cards are used. The player with the most cards at the end is the winner.

Supplies:
deck of cards (Remove all face cards)
Pass out 7 cards to each player. Put the other cards facedown in a pile. Players try to find two numbers that make 10. Player 1 asks Player 2 for a card needed to make 10. If he/she does not have one, Player 1 will “go fish” and pull a card from the pile. Any matches of 10 are set aside. If a player runs out of cards, they may draw 7 more from the pile. Continue to play until the pile is gone. The player with the most matches wins the game.
