In this topic, students will:
add within 100 using place-value strategies and a hundred chart
use an open number line to add tens and ones within 100
break apart numbers into tens and ones to find their sum
break apart addends and combine them in different ways to make numbers that are easy to add mentally
choose and use any strategy to add two-digit numbers
use drawings and equations to solve one-step and two-step problems
Vocabulary:
Tens - the digit that shows how many groups of 10 are in a number.
Ones - the digit that shows how many ones are in a number.
Open number line - a tool that can help you add or subtract. It can begin at any number.
Break apart - breaking numbers into their place value parts.
At-home Practice:
Supplies: a deck of cards
Cards are dealt evenly among players. At the signal, players “race” to put their cards in two piles – odds and evens. The first player to finish calls, “Stop!” Other players freeze and then check the piles of the finished player. If all numbers are sorted correctly, the player wins. If not, the opponents get to finish sorting and try to cross the finish line first. (If both players make a mistake, no winner is named.)
