In this topic, students will:
recognize shapes by how they look
describe plane shapes by how they look
draw polygon shapes
draw cubes and describe how they look
partition rectangles into equal-size squares
partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths
make equal shares that do not have the same shape
Vocabulary:
Vertices (vertex) - corner points where 2 sides of a polygon meet or where edges of a solid figure meet. One corner point is called a vertex.
Quadrilateral - a polygon that has 4 sides.
Pentagon - a polygon that has 5 sides.
Hexagon - a polygon that has 6 sides.
Polygon - a closed plane shape with 3 or more sides.
Angle - the corner shape formed by two sides that meet.
Right angle - a right angle forms a square corner.
Cube - a solid figure with six faces that are matching squares.
Face - a flat surface of a solid that does not roll.
Edge - a line formed where two faces of a solid figure meet.
Equal shares - parts of a whole that are the same size.
Halves - when a whole is divided into 2 equal shares.
Thirds - when a whole is divided into 3 equal shares.
Fourths - when a whole is divided into 4 equal shares.
At-home Practice:
Collect items from around the house, then sort them by their shapes. Discuss the different characteristics of each shape.

Supplies:
a 6-sided die
paper and pencil
Player 1 rolls the die. Whatever number he/she lands on, Player 1 will draw a shape with that many sides. (ex. Player 1 rolls a 4 and draws a square). If Players roll a 1 or 2, he/she may roll again.
