In this topic, students will:
use the order of operations to evaluate expressions
write simple expressions that show calculations with numbers
interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them
Vocabulary:
Numerical expression - a mathematical phrase that contains numbers and at least one operation.
Evaluate - doing the calculations to find the value of an expression.
Order of operations - tells which calculations to do before others. First, simplify inside the parentheses, brackets, and braces. Then multiply and divide in order from left to right. Finally, add and subtract in order from left to right.
Parentheses - Curved symbols ( ) used in mathematical expressions and equations to group numbers or variables together.Â
Brackets - square symbols [ ] used in mathematical expressions and equations to group numbers or variables together.
Braces - curly symbols { } used with parentheses and brackets in mathematical expressions and equations to group numbers or variables together.
