In this topic, students will:
determine whether shapes are divided into equal shares
divide shapes into 2 and equal shares and use words to describe shares
understand that more equal shares of the same whole create smaller shares
Vocabulary:
Equal shares - the parts of a whole that are the same size
Halves - when a whole is divided into 2 equal shares
Fourths - When a whole is divided into 4 equal shares
Quarters - the 4 equal shares of a whole are called fourths or quarters
At-home Practice:
Supplies:
a 6-sided die
Paper and pencil
Player 1 rolls the die. He/she draws a square and then breaks the square into the number that he/she rolled. (ex. Player 1 rolls a 4 and breaks the square into 4 equal pieces.) Player 2 checks to make sure they are equal shares. If Player 1 is correct, he/she gets one point. Then it's Player 2's turn. Continue playing until 1 player has 10 points.
