In this topic, students will:
estimate the length of an object by relating the length of an object to a known measurement
estimate measures and use a ruler to measure length and height to the nearest inch
estimate measures and use tools to measure the length and height of objects to the nearest inch, foot, and yard
estimate and measure the length and height of objects in inches, feet, and yards
estimate measures and use a ruler to measure length and height to the nearest centimeter
estimate measures and use a ruler, meter stick, or tape measure to measure length and height to the nearest centimeter or meter
measure the length and height of objects using different metric units
tell how much longer one object is than another
choose tools, units, and methods that help to be precise when measuring
Vocabulary:
Estimate - making a good guess
Inch (in.) - a standard unit of length that is a part of 1 foot.
Foot (ft) - a standard unit of length equal to 12 inches.
Yard (yd) - a standard unit of length equal to 3 feet.
Length - the distance from one end to the other end of an object.
Height - how tall an object is from bottom to top.Â
Nearest inch - the inch closest to the measure.
Centimeter (cm) - a metric unit of length that is part of 1 meter.
Nearest centimeter - the centimeter closest to the measure.
Meter - a metric unit of length equal to 100 centimeters.
At-home Practice:
Supplies
A deck of cards
ruler with inches and centimeters
Before play begins, decide on a unit of measure (inches or centimeters). Turn over a card. The first player to find a nearby object measuring the length on the card wins the card. Play continues until one player has 10 cards. That player is the winner!
