In this topic, students will:
understand how to read and write unit fractions for equal-sized parts of a region
use a fraction to represent multiple copies of a unit fraction
determine and draw the whole (unit) given one part (unit fraction).
represent fractions less than 1 on a number line
represent fractions greater than 1 one a number line
measure length to the nearest half inch and show the data on a line
measure length to the nearest fourth inch and show the data on a line plot
determine when a problem has either extra or missing information
Vocabulary:
Fraction - a symbol, such as ½, used to name a part of a whole or a location on a number line
Unit fraction - represents one part of a whole that has been divided into equal parts. A unit fraction always has a numerator of 1
Numerator - the number above the fraction bar in a fraction. The numerator shows how many equal parts are described.
Denominator - the number below the fraction bar in a fraction. The denominator shows the total number of equal parts.
Line plot - a way to organize data on a number line, where each dot or X represents one number in a set of data.
Nearest half inch - when you measure to the nearest half inch, your measurement ends with a ½ or full inch.
Nearest fourth inch - when you measure to the nearest fourth inch, your measurement ends with a ¼, ½, ¾, or full inch.
At-home Practice:
Supplies:
a deck of cards (remove face cards)
Scrap paper and a pencil
Divide the deck into 3 even piles. Each player should take one pile and keep it facedown. Leave the third pile facedown in the middle between the two players. Flip over one card from the middle pile. This will be your denominator (bottom number of th fraction). Each player will then flip over 1 card from their pile. The cards will be the numerator (top number of the fraction). Decide who has the larger fraction. It may be helpful to draw the fraction using a rectangle. The player with the larger fraction wins all the cards. Continue playing until the middle pile of cards is gone. The player with the most cards wins.
