Little Bench

Little Bench is a design studio created by students, for students. This project was created initially to fill a gap in the Major Project market: the need for designers. The project then morphed into a functioning design studio that prepared us for the creative industry.

We took inspiration from existing design studios, such as
Of Note and Milkable, in terms of our brand and professional voice.

As the trimester progressed, the project grew from being solely about helping students within SAE, to preparing to continue the studio
post-degree.

Client Work

5 String Studios, and their game; God of Riffs

God of Riffs is an epic, metal, VR game and required an equally epic logo. Their artists were able to take the logo and make amazing cover art.

M808

M808 is an awesome podcast based in Perth. This client knew exactly what they wanted for their logo and drew up a sketch. We just needed to create the typography and add some flair to the design.

Moonware Studios, and their game; The Water Serpent

Moonware studios created a fantastic 2D, pixel art game to spread awareness of the devastating bushfires. They wanted us to create a pixel art logo in the shape of a snake for them, as well as create a new logo for their studio.

Confined

Confined is an amazing escape room in Perth. They offer an array of escape rooms, a laser room, and a VR room with state-of-the-art equipment. They tasked us with creating a t-shirt design for them to use as uniforms.

Process

5 String Studios, and their game; God of Riffs

The texture for the logo didn't start out as metal. Originally we created a rocky texture, similar to what they were trying to emulate in their original logo.

Once we had the texture right, we needed to find the right typography; we wanted to create the shape of a shield. We had this version tested in game, but found the texture appeared too grainy once in the
VR space.

We tried a plain black version of the logo but felt we could do better. We changed the rock texture to metal, and reshaped the letters to enhance the shield shape. We tested it again inside the VR space and found that the metallic version looked great.

Confined

The design for this client was inspired by the tattoos in the divergent series.

We originally had a much different design to the finished product. We were working two designs simultaneously; we had the organic, curved shaped design which featured symbols mainly found in the escape rooms, and a vertical design with original symbols in the design.

The client preferred a mix between the two different styles of symbols and we worked hand-in-hand with the client to tailor the symbols to their preference. We tried to feature the same pop of red as can be seen on their door. Ultimately, the client preferred to have a minimalist black and white design.

We think the design looks great, the client is blown away, and we can't wait to see the shirts printed and in action!

M808

Working with M808 was very easy and laid-back. He provided us with a sketch, which can be seen in the upper left corner. It was then our task to bring his vision to life, and add or subtract any elements in order to give it the best possible appearance. We opted to enlarge the Perth skyline and bring it in to the foreground, emphasise the shark fin, give a stylised version of the smoke emitted from the skyline, and drop the text to sit behind the skyline. We then began working on the typography, and how to incorporate the sun into the logotype. This project was great to complete and a pleasure to work with.

Moonware Studios, and their game; The Water Serpent

We provided Moonware Studios with two variations of their requested logos. For the Water serpent, we created one logo to look as if the snake had coiled up and the tongue created the 'S' of serpent, and one logo in which we used the outline of the snake to create the 'w' of Water. The client preferred the outlined logo so we began improving that version. We faced the serpent the other way, so that if they wanted to use it to replace the W in the title, the serpent would be looking towards the rest of the letters, and not away.

We provided two very different ideas for the Moonware Studios logo. They client preferred the rusted look of the cogs, but the overall shape of the first logos worked well. We decided to combine both ideas and were able to create something great.
