My project was to choose a national park and to design a pattern. I chose Rottnest island because have been there many time as a kid with family, friends and school excursions, i loved the wildlife especially the Quokkas and also it was the first time i saw a peacock that wasn't in a enclosure like the Perth zoo but seeing it walk around outside the small shops and cafes was really cool and having the peacocks also let you know that the Quokka isn't the only animal that live on Rottnest island.
The focus on my pattern at first was the Quokka since they are well known on Rottnest, After creating a few patterns with Quokkas i later received feedback that i should start making the peacocks as the main element and have place a few small quokkas around the pattern. This is to let people know that the Quokkas aren't the only wildlife living on the island.
For my patterns I asked an audio student to create some music that will go with the flow of my animated patterns. The first Audio that he sent me was a demo that he sent to a classmate of mine, after having a listen and receiving feedback it was clear that the audio he gave me didn't really suit the animation but at least it was something that I can add to my animation for the Yagan tower screen test. After a few weeks of sending him emails I soon get an email back saying that he worked on some new audio from scratch that he later sent to me. The new audio that was sent to me sounded so much better than the first one and along with the constant changes I made to my pattern, I was relieved that the new audio sat in really well with my pattern.
Here is my first animated pattern where i was still learning how to use After Effects but i was happy with how it came out and with the feedback i received this meant i was able to try out new methods in after effects and what other special effects i can add into my pattern.
With the amount of feedback i had gathered about my pattern, i soon ended up finding more ways with how to improve my animation with examples being that the different peacocks have their feathers opening and closing at different times, having the background gradient change to different colours and as well have hue of peacock change colour along with the background so that they aren't the same colour. And lastly putting in audio which i have received from an awesome audio student.
The changes I have made with my pattern is to have the feathers open and close in a more natural smooth look because as before when the feathers open and closed they had a small jump which looked a bit out of place but now they are a lot smoother. The leaves were made to rotate at different angles so that they are not rotating the same time. The Audio i have received from the audio student is personally better and fits in really well with the pattern and especially with the sound of the waves and seagulls in the background.
My logo designs have went through many changes, mostly the stroke of the quokka and the colours of the backgrounds. One of the big issue was not having more of the fur strokes inside the head which made the head of the quokka look like a seperate shape and wasn't part of the body. I stuck to the light blue gradient on the circle since it looked better than having a darker blue gradient which i wasn't a fan of.
The two peacocks design you see here are what i used for the static patterns and also for poster designs. When creating the peacock it was difficult at first since there were barely any simple enough peacock vectors to get inspiration from, so instead i found one image where a peacock had their feathers tucked together and so it gave me an idea to draw a bunch of different shaped "circles" and bundle them together. The stroke on the feathers didn't sit right along with the peacock so instead i decided to get rid of the strokes which made the different colours and shapes of the feathers to pop out.
The main idea for my poster was that instead of having the Quokka as the main image on the poster someone suggested to have the Peacock instead since it gave the poster more colour and also send the message the the Quokka isn't the only animal that lives on the island. The ocean at first was just a plain gradient with nothing inside until I ended up adding in different shapes that had a lighter blue so that the ocean wasn't the one colour. The sky is one of the trickiest backgrounds to do since i wanted it to have a warm sunny afternoon feeling but the problem was how it sat with the sun and the text which made it compete with each other because of the strong orangey red that the sky had. The Peacock was more appealing with the white strokes since having black was not a good look for it since the peacock is a colourful bird.
During the passing weeks my poster has made quite a few changes such as:
Having the sky in a different gradient that made it feel warmer and also correspond with the colour of the peacock.
Since Rottnest has a lighthouse i was able to design a small lighthouse design that can sit near the top of the poster.
The white stroke is now outside around the peacock instead of having it around in every shape of the feather
Tilted the sun so it looks a bit more natural.
instead of having a straight line across the poster, the ocean now has a wavy look to it which fits with the shape of the suns rays.
Different versions of how i can position the text in different ways.
