This story is about friendship and conflict, portrayed through the characters Naomi and Kiyo, their friendship turns sour when Naomi cannot contain her jealousy and sets out to destroy Kiyo's peice of origami resulting in an ugly dispute, hurting one another tremendously, it is only when they face the consequences of their actions that they realize how wrong they were and choose to show kindness and compassion to mend their friendship.
I have been a huge fan of Studio Ghibli animations since I was a child and it bewildered me to see flawed characters become better versions of themselves by the end of the movie. I was also inspired by the storytelling and wholesomeness of previous major projects such as 'Kinship' and 'Yellow'.
The purpose of this project is to tell an entertaining story that explores behaviors of children and how their actions impact others, this story teaches the importance of empathy and encourages the audience to examine their own behaviors and build healthier relationships.

This is the scene where the characters are introduced to the audience with Naomi focusing on creating the perfect piece of origami before proudly showing it off to Kiyo.
Naomi is presented as very ambitious, competitive and boastful. This confident facade breaks down when she becomes jealous and insecure, she manages to overcome these flaws once she acknowledges how her actions have negatively impacted her friendship becoming a more compassionate person.
Kiyo is portrayed as a quiet, humble and the typical "well behaved" child, but when his humbleness is tested by Naomi he acts out in anger because of his sensitivity, yet he manages to overcome his anger when also seeing the effects of his actions and reverts back to his calm compassionate self.
This was my original concept piece, I've made a few changes to Kiyo as well as their role in the story.
These are just some of the scenes that are finalized for the final production of this animation, origami patterns being the most iconic and unique selling point of the designs.
I did some warm up practice animations before getting into production, using video references of myself doing the actions and learning how to use Toon boom Harmony.
This rough animation includes the continuation of my vertical slice.
