Willow Fearns for the foley track
Ashmi Gandhi for helping us out with colour.
The aim of duality was to create a world and story that encouraged the idea of equality
The project was made specifically to be shown on the Yagan tower in the Perth CBD. As such it was made with the area and screen restrictions in mind.
Everything from the layout, character design, sound design to even the camera angle, were specifically tailored to the tower and with the area's audience in mind.
These two creatures are very different when compared to each other. They are almost opposites, and yet they still live and laugh together as equals. Enjoying everyday life alongside each other.
Light Creatures - Megan Lucas
The light creatures are small and live alongside the shadow beings.
They are short, round, squishy, and give a wispy feeling. They are made of light and come in every colour of light. You can often see a halo of light emitting from their skin, except for their eyes which are void of light and colour. They are known to enjoy telling a good story.
Shadow Creatures - Bryce Baker
For the shadow creatures we wanted to make sure that they were the exact opposite to the light creatures in their physical design so while the light creatures are short and more on the round side, the shadow creatures are taller and have more angular designs to their bodies. We also wanted to keep them skinnier to better lend to the more angular direction we wanted to go in.
As for the colours we had to experiment around a bit with the screen tests given so that we were able to figure out the right combination that would make the character still readable on the screen while conveying the shadowy nature of the creature.
filled with wonder & meaning.
Paper Lantern
Flying Paper Lantern
Metal Windmill Lantern
World Design and assets - Darren Brockbank
I created houses inspired by objects that possessed a connection to light & shadows, that share a common purpose but originate from different countries.
The first house, the Paper House was designed for the light creatures, inspired by Chinese/Japanese square paper lanterns, the basic materials that I normally associate with a paper lantern were wood & paper with fire as the light source.
The second, the Metal Windmill Lantern was designed for the shadow creatures, inspired by old metal lanterns the kind that a night watchman might’ve carried a long time ago in the west, the basic materials that I associated with it were metal & glass with fire as the light source.
Wood and paper burn when lit on fire but metal and glass are created from using fire, this in of itself is a form of duality
Upon hearing about the project Jess was hit with inspiration. Jess wrote a short piece for each of the species and composed the parts such that they can work as a duet or a harmony. The first two minutes is a duet introducing each part of the harmony before playing together as a single harmony for the rest of the song.
