The subject of my work is what I imagine Leonardo Da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, and Kehinde Wiley's work to look like if they were all mixed together. In order to make this piece, I used acrylic paints, watercolor, and permanent marker. I choose to create this specific piece because I thought it would blend the three artist's completely unique and different styles together smoothly. I arranged it so that the skull would be the "eye catcher" that is in the center. The vine is a little distraction to bring the boldness level down a few notches.
In this piece, I show leading lines, formal balance, primary colors, and contrast. The leading lines are what shows Picasso's style in this piece. They are the outline of a style of cubism. The primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) give it a bold/vibrant, yet simple look. The actual skull itself represents Da Vinci's study and sketches of anatomy. He would sketch in his many notebooks the human body as he discovered more and more how it worked. The vine and green background is where Wiley's design comes in. It captures his exciting color choice and floral background style. I have a different shaped and sized skull then I started out with, I guess it made the lines thicker and the space between them wider.
The meaning of this piece is that there can be multiple connections between artists and their styles, and the styles can be blended together. I never thought the combination of a skull and cubism would work, but boy was I wrong. The vine ended up being the frosting on the cake. This project relates to my life because it captures three artists I researched and learned about. These artists play roles in everyday life. ( Da Vinci's discoveries and inventions for example) If I could change one thing, it would be the lover part of the jaw. I feel as though I could have used a better color and not made the teeth/mouth so formed/shaped.
