Painted Clay Sculpture

This was my painted clay sculpture. We were given the task to create an animal of our choice out of clay. I chose a chameleon because I have always wanted one and find them absolutely adorable. This piece was made using white clay and acrylic paint. I made the body and the head separately, but attached them using the scratch, water, attach method. To make my design I used pencil to sketch first, but then went over it with acrylic paint. I focused my colors on warm, summery colors as we are headed into spring and summer soon.

The patterns I chose were dictated by the size of my chameleon, I worked around the small amount of space I had. Dots were the easiest thing to paint as they did not require uses a brush as much as lines would have. I tried to fill in as much negative space as possible, but made sure to highlight the different pieces of the body. I had a hard time erasing some of the pencil marks, as they were covered with paint, but was able to erase a majority of them.

This is my favorite project we have done this semester, I love the finished product and can use it as a decoration in my house. I think that I work best with clay in comparison to other materials because of its versatility and ability to be molded into almost anything. If I could change anything about this piece it would be the cleanness of the lies/borders. I would have erased the lines enough to see them only faintly before painting over them. When I look at this project from start to finish, I am happy that I stuck to my original plan of making it upbeat and summery.
