Historical Coil Pot

This is my modernized historical pot. My pot was based off an ancient Greek style, I wanted to choose a culture I knew a good amount about. For materials, I used white clay and carving tools. Instead of adding to the work, I decided to take away from it and engrave patterns on the surface. My pot was made from coils and the scratch, water, attach method. I must have used over 20 coils to get the pot to the height it is.

While creating this I had to keep in mind the circumference of the pot and make sure one side was not flatter than the other. I also had to figure out how to make the neck of the pot skinnier than the rest of it and make the lips of it reach outward. I wanted my pot to look similar to the Greek style pot, but not exactly like it. I decided not to add handles to it, unlike the pot I used for inspiration. To add interest to the surface, I carved geometric designs and lines. The glaze I choose was specifically to make it pop even more, the blue is an eye-catcher.

I really like the way I was able to make my work the size it, (about 12 inches high) and that I was able to build something as intricate as this. However, I struggled with making the outside perfectly rounded, there are a few spots where the outside bulges a little bit. If I created another work like this, I would have evened out the outside of the pot so that there were no bulges and everything was smooth. This work shows that I can successfully make something out of clay coils, and do it well.
