Sustained Investigation #3

This was the third and final piece of my 3 part sustained investigation project, where i focused my work on fish and making them out of straws in order to represent the pollution in many/most bodies of water. I choose to follow the idea of my first investigation and use the straws to build a frame for the fish, but did not fill the negative space. I thought that because this could be used as either a mobile or a wind chime that it would make more sense to make it as light at possible.

Through much trial and error, I found that the only thing that really held the straws together was hot glue, tape would not stick for long and was not able to cover the corners/creases. I also used white string to hang the fish, although I would have preferred to use fishing line, but I did not have any available. I chose not to make the colors of the straws match, I focused on the idea that in the real world, you can not pick and choose the kind of pollution the fish consume. Unlike my last two investigation pieces, I decided to make different kinds of fish to include more than one species. I thought that it would add o kind of flare to the overall project.

I realize that this is the last piece of my investigation and that it the most important, but I think that with the understanding of what my theme was, that it does a good job of wrapping up the sustained investigation. I think that the mobile idea gave my project movement and truly made it 3D. I think that if I could have changed anything it would be the fact that some of the corners are not as sharp or crisp as I would have wanted, but it was not easy to do with ends that make a 90 degree angle when put together. Overall, this is my favorite part of my sustained investigation. I hope that with this project I can bring to light the issue that affects almost every body of water across the world.
