Artist Inspired Project

Warren MacKenzie

The artist I gained inspiration from is Warren MacKenzie. I noticed that his works were the type of pottery that was both useful and practical. I also noticed that his glazes had a naturalistic look as the colors he used were mainly earth tones. I really liked how simple MacKenzie's Yunomi bowls are. They are not abstract, yet their simplicity is satisfying enough. It is refreshing to see a collection of art that is not too complicated or over whelming. I decided to try to make a few Yunomi bowls of my own, but I did not want to copy his exact technique so I changed their depth and circumference.

For materials I used white clay and only my hands. I used the method of pinching with my thumb and forefinger to create a bowl pinch pot, which would eventually become a bowl. While creating this I payed close attention to the smoothness of the outside and inside of the bowl, I wanted them to be as smooth and even as possible. I wanted my work to look organized and clean, so I was very careful. I really like the way I sized my work, it is small and light enough to move around. I struggled with keeping the rims of the bowls even and smooth, but I tried my best to make them even and not rigid. My work shows that I was able to use inspiration from a famous potter and turn it into work of my own.
