"If at first you don't succeed, stop"

ARTIST STATEMENT

I really like these types of photographs, meaning multiple exposure, the ones showing the same person more than once in the same picture. I think they're really interesting because at first you don't notice what's going on, it seems normal, but then you do a double take and realize it's the same person. The subject and I went outside during class to take this picture and for the record we both knew he couldn't actually do a cartwheel, but that was part of the humor. Besides the skills of the subject, most of the magic was done in photoshop. I had to layer each of the photographs one by one and erase the top layer so that the bottom one showed through. I had a little trouble in the beginning with overlapping people, or person I guess, so I had to end up using the cut off image first which wasn't ideal. I really like this picture because I feel like it shows the action very well. In the first shot, you can see his intent before he starts the cartwheel and then you see him falling and the his final place on the paper. I think this would be considered informal balance because although he's on both sides of the center, he's not in the same position and kind of offset. I was very pleased with the range of values in this print. It's dark enough, but not too dark, and light enough, but not too light. You can see all the details of what he's wearing to the ridges in the building behind. If I had more time to work on this image I think that I would try to get a better more spread out cartwheel. Then I could get more of the action in the frame rather than a cut off in the beginning and such a big jump between the first and second images.
