Analogous Color

"Billards"

ARTIST STATEMENT

I had a hard time with this project. Figuring out which three colors to use was only one struggle, the next was figuring out how to use them in an eye appealing way. I tried the pool balls on the pool table and then I tried to use bean bag chairs I have in my room, but that didn't work either. Eventually I just threw these billiards onto the carpet and liked how they fell in place. I think the detail in the carpet illustrates how crisp the image is and how it is the sharpest in the middle of the group whereas in front and behind the balls are blurry, the selective focus gives the image a better look rather than all blurry or all sharp. I kept half of the red ball out of the image which I think adds a cool perspective in a rule of thirds kind of way. I also thought that covering part of the orange "5" ball would add an interesting look rather than seeing every part of every ball. The great thing about photography isn't just about capturing what you see, but also what you don't see. For example, I looked at these pool balls and saw a cool, creative set up on a carper with great texture, but I never noticed the lights shining off of the balls until it came to editing time. I realize now how boring the photograph would be without the lights, all the balls would be solid colors, what's interesting about that? I think it makes the image stronger especially how all the light spots are different sizes, there's enough negative space with so much carpet, the spots break up that plain negative space on the balls. For editing I turned up the brightness because the image was darker than i had hope and I palyed with the contrast a lot to try and fix the less than preferred artificial light.
