Film: Chirstmas

ARTIST STATEMENT

If you have read any of my other artist statements in our film photography unit, you would know that I have had trouble with cameras, lots of trouble. Between having to share cameras, cameras breaking, shutters not working correctly, batteries dying, the list goes on and on. In this case, I had a shutter issue which gave me a blank role of film. Instead of having to retake the images again like the last times, I was allowed to manipulate on of my past prints. I wanted to still follow the Christmas theme and I decided to put an angel in the image. I chose to use my inspired image for this because I could make it look like the angel was supposed to be there. What I mean is that Ben, who is in the bottom right of the image appears to be staring up at the angel. After adding the angel, I still had a lot of dark space. Instead of burning and dodging like I have done before, I got the idea from

Ms. Medsker to add other objects to it. As I thought of shapes that would look interesting in this image, my eyes fell upon thumb tacks in the art room, specifically the clear one. By putting these thumb tacks on I not only got more light but also an interesting design from the light passing through the thumb tacks. If I could change something about this image, I think I would make the angel a little less see-through by adding making the paper thicker or cutting it out on darker paper. This image relates to my life because I see angels as a big part of Christmas along with friends and both of those are displayed in this image.
