Film: Conflict

"Patiently Waiting"

ARTIST STATEMENT

This was one of the most fun shoots I've done. The scanner makes the image seem darker than it is in real life so I posted the original picture above. When I was given this project I knew I wanted to do something with skis. Whether they were being thrown away, broken, or like my image, out of season. I had the idea and the image in my head, it was just a matter of creating the mood I was trying to set. I started by putting all my gear on a sitting in that chair. From there my goal was to try to create a disappointed, tired of waiting sort of mood, which was difficult with no facial expressions. I had my camera set up on my tripod and I was trying a bunch of different poses: leg crossed, leg not crossed, head tilted left, head tilted right, any way to show disappointment because that was the conflict. Skiing on no snow and waiting for winter. I'm upset that for the people viewing this page, the image appears so dark. It's much lighter in person and has a much better range of value. There isn't much interesting behind me so I didn't feel the need use formal balance. I really like the rule of thirds in this image, it does a good job of showing my gaze out into the snowless landscape. You can still make out my crossed leg and my poles stand out very well. If I had more time on this project I would start over and take the picture with my in a skier's tuck like I was trying to ski. I think this would take a more comedic approach to the image and show determination to ski even though it's clearly not going to work. Doing this would also show more conflict because there is a more visible problem. I would also print the image lighter or make sure it showed up the same after and before being scanned.
