Imagine this; you’re grabbing a book from a shelf when you smell the delicious artisan coffee brewing in the cafe on the other side of the store. There’s a book club being hosted, reading something nearby. It’s a nice, quiet place to hang out when it’s been a long day. This place is called Morgenstern’s Books, Cafe, and Artisan in Downtown Bloomington, Indiana. They sell books, coffee, and delicious snacks at this amazing bookstore. Come down to read and eat when you’re tired and famished!

Morgenstern’s hasn’t always been where it is now. “Morgenstern’s was originally a bookstore at a different location about 30 years ago now, and it was over somewhere by Eastland Plaza, and they were in business for a little less than a decade,” says Jackson Wright, the manager of in-store operations. Eventually, other bigger, more popular bookstores would come in, causing Morgenstern's to have to shut down, for the time being. Soon, many other bookstores would close down. So many closed down that Bloomington didn’t have any bookstores. But many people who remembered Morgenstern’s built it back up with local help, and by 2021, it had opened at a new location.

Morgenstern’s sells various books like Harry Potter, Warriors, and Heartstopper. The most popular book series they sell is the Sarah J. Maas series. They also have a kids section, with many books for young children. “Every Saturday, we do a children’s storytime,” says Wright. They sell many types of coffee and pastries. Their coffee shop is a big part of what keeps them up and running.

At Morgenstern’s, they host many book clubs and events. There are also author events where authors will come to Mogenstern’s where people can talk to them and sometimes even have their books signed. They will also interview the authors. Morgenstern’s and Bloomington keep each other running. Morgenstern’s provides books, food, and fun to everyone who comes in, and Bloomington buys the books, which is how Morgenstern’s can provide to them. Their company mission is to “support reading for all ages,” says Wright.
