Without a doubt, summer is by far the hottest season of the year. What’s a better way to combat this heat by eating a nice, cold treat? But what if you don’t know what kinds of treats to stock up on this summer? This list will help you decide what treats you should get, describing what they are, and why we chose this item. These are the top 5 best summer treats.

Number 5: Slurpees

Slurpees are a brand of carbonated slushies sold traditionally at Seven Elevens. With 34 unique flavors, such as famous variants like blue raspberry, cherry, and Coca-Cola, Slurpees are a great summer treat for hot and humid temperatures. Callen Robertson says, “Slurpees are my go-to drink during a hot summer day.” Because it is made of a carbonated beverage, we put it at number five because it is easy to melt. It melts about as fast as ice does in 90° weather. Slurpees are also pretty thin, so they’ll melt all the more quickly. Overall, It’s a good treat for mid 70°’s weather, where frozen treats melt a little slower. This is a treat for you and your family to enjoy.

Number 4: Shave Ice / Snow Cones

Shave ice and snow cones are a great summer treat. These items are sold in Kona Ice trucks. Compared to Slurpees, snow cones don’t melt as easily because they are more solid than liquid, and are generally thicker. Some of Kona Ice’s most popular flavors are Blue Raspberry, Tigers Blood, and Pina Colada. They also have a harder texture than Slurpees, which makes them only able to be consumed with a spoon, instead of being consumed with a straw and a spoon. The flavors that Kona Ice serves have more accessibility than Slurpees’ flavors, so we put this one at number 4. It's close to Slurpees, but shaved ice has more accessible flavors.

Number 3: Bomb Pops

Bomb Pops are an extraordinary treat that will fight the heat on a hot summer day. Bomb Pops are popsicles with a flavor of cherry, blue raspberry, and lime flavor each color-coded in red, blue, and white. These popsicles are not only refreshing and a delight to have, but are also colored in the American flag, which makes this a perfect popsicle to take out of your freezer on the 4th of July. The reason they are number 3 on the list is because of how easy they are to melt. Like Slurpees, they aren’t the best treat for high 90° weather but instead a better treat for mid 80° weather. Luckily, the next one is way better.

Number 2: Ice Cream Sandwiches

Ice cream sandwiches are a great classic treat on a hot summer day. Usually during summer when I am humid, I reach for an ice cream sandwich. Ice cream sandwiches are great because they come in various flavors like normal ice cream such as original vanilla, mint chip, and strawberry. George Cronin, a sixth grader at EJHS says, “Ice cream sandwiches are an amazing treat overall. I think it is a great combination because you get both chocolate and vanilla, which are both separate flavors mixed. They have that delicious combination of chocolate and ice cream which can sort of distract you from the humid and hot weather of the summer.” George talks about the contrast between chocolate and vanilla ice cream, which makes it stand out from any other dessert. He also talks about the fact that even though the temperature is humid and hot, the ice cream cools you down and distracts you from the weather outside. Ice cream sandwiches are, overall, a very classic treat for the summer, and a nice balance of ice cream and chocolate. But, can it compare with the number 1 spot?

Number 1: Otter Pops

The number 1 spot is an obvious choice for summer treats. This has got to be the most classic summer treat of all time. Otter Pops are a brand of popsicle that comes in plastic tubes. Unlike other kinds of popsicles that come on a wooden stick, the kind that comes in tubes is objectively better. This is because when it is melting in the hot summer air, the melted liquid is collected by the plastic tube and you can drink it. Not only that, but it comes in multiple flavors that are mainly based on fruits and berries. Because of its unique idea, it earns a spot at number 1.
