Pokemon Horizons: Is It Good?

“Let’s go, Sprigatito!” So says Liko, one of the main characters, along with Roy, in the new Pokémon series, Pokémon Horizons. This is one of the first Pokémon shows that do not feature Ash Ketchum and Pikachu, much to the dismay of many fans. But, even if some people hate that there is no more Ash, other people love the new series. Quentin Thurman, a student at EJHS, said, “Some of the characters kind of relate to me.”

This newest series of the classic franchise is set in the Kanto region (Red and Blue) for a short time in the beginning of the series, and then moves into the Paldea region (Scarlet and Violet). The storyline is an interesting one. There is a group of evildoers (not Team Rocket) called the Explorers, who try again and again to abduct Liko because of her special pendant with a secret inside. And again and again, a group of welldoers keep her safe. In their travels, they meet Roy, a Kantonian boy who loves Pokémon! He owns a strange pokéball that seems to be from ancient times.

This strange pokéball surprisingly holds a Shiny Rayquaza, which bursts out of its pokéball and flies away. This Rayquaza later becomes the center of the Rising Volt Tackler’s adventures. After the experience with the sky high Pokémon,Roy joins the Rising Volt Tacklers, searching for the Black Rayquaza. They go to the Paldea region and plan to go to Liko’s house so that she can return home. But Liko finds that she enjoyed traveling with the Volt Tacklers more than the quiet life at home, so of course, she continues traveling and seeing interesting things.

While some of this is happening, the Explorers who tried to capture the pendant are replaced, and another mysterious figure takes the job insead. They are now going to attempt to capture the shiny Rayquaza, apparently for their organization.

Liko, Roy, and the others travel throughout the rest of the Paldea region, searching for the Rayquaza, and meeting many other Pokémon along the way. Overall, this is a pretty good series, directed by Satoshi Tajiri (the creator of Pokémon), but truly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
