“Get in loser we’re going shopping.” Have you seen the new mean girl trailer? The new Mean Girls is coming out January 12 this year.
The new Mean Girls is not a remake, but it isn’t exactly a sequel, it is like an adaptation. Lorne Michaels, the producer, wrote, “It isn't a remake, it's a new interpretation.” The movie is about the Tony-nominated Broadway musical, Mean Girls. The musical ran from 2018 to 2021 and they performed 883 times. The musical adapted from the 2004 film and according to Us Weekly, “The musical made its world premiere in October 2017 in Washington, D.C. The production hit Broadway in April 2018 and ran through March 2020. In January 2021, the show closed permanently but it continued to tour. Mean Girls national tour kicked off in Buffalo, New York, in September 2019.¨
In the movie trailer, the original actors Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert are shown but have not confirmed that they are coming back to act. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows are the only actors who have confirmed they are coming back. Fey confirmed in February 2023 that she and Tim Meadows, who played principal Mr. Duvall in the 2004 film, would be back for the movie.
According to rotten tomatoes, the new mean girl musical was given a 3.5 out of 5 as an average rating. 130 fresh tomatoes and 56 rotten tomatoes. There were a lot of mixed reviews about this movie. Jon C said “I did not like the musical ..lol I don't mind a little musical but this was over the top. I also felt tricked because when I was looking up the movie it never said it was a musical. The trailer had no musical hints. Maybe I missed it, who knows but this movie/musical was not as good as I hoped.” Another review was from Katherine J, “2024 in my opinion is off to a great start! This movie, (which is a musical), was a very fun time, the songs were catchy, the movie was really funny, and had so many surprising moments! It doesn't have many flaws, so I recommend this movie.”
This movie is definitely not the original but maybe you would like it better. It is a musical so if you don't like musicals this movie may not be for you. This movie had some mixed reviews so I guess you would have to watch it for yourself to decide.
