Gonker, the goofball dog

Dog Gone has a 4.5 rating, though a five star review would make more sense. Dog Gone is based on the true story of a father and son who repair their fractured relationship during a forced hike of the Appalachian trail to find their beloved lost dog. The director is Stephen Herek. Dog Gone: A Lost Pet's Extraordinary Journey and the Family Who Brought Him Home. It tells the true story of Gonker, a goofy but beloved dog with Addison's disease who got lost on the Appalachian trail in October 1998.

Fielding Marshall who is played by Johnny Berchtold for Dog Gone, decided to get a dog while his friend Nate/Nick Peine who says he shouldn’t because he can barely take care of himself. But they end up keeping the pup and at a party Fielding decides to name the pup Gonker because, well, he got gonked on the head by Gonker.  Gonker was adopted while Fielding was a junior at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Gonker was a golden retriever who loved wearing sweater vests. Gonker did yoga stretches with Fielding, mainly the ‘downward dog’. And Gonker also did a trick where he is given a donut, throws it up, and at the very last second bites it with his teeth and eats it.

Gonker in real life

Fielding's mother, Ginny

Sadly how the Marshall’s figure out that Gonker has Addison’s disease is, Gonker wouldn’t eat his breakfast right away, just like for when Ginny Marshall/Kimberly Williams-Paisley ‘accidentally’ drops a pie Gonker just lays down and makes a sad whine, not even eating a small bit of the pie. Ginny calls over Fielding but Gonker does the same thing, he just lies down and whines. And then they go to the vet where they are told of Gonker’s disease. But the next day Gonker was up and ready to play. One day Fielding and Nate were on the Appalachian trail with Gonker and while walking Gonker spotted a fox Nate said to go get it and then that’s how Gonker got lost. There are flashbacks of Fielding's mother Ginny having a dog, Oji, when she was a young girl, who was run over by a car when she was at school. When Ginny hears the news that Feilding lost his dog she does everything in her power to get Gonker found, and because Gonker only had twenty days left it was even more stressful. People from all over were calling to help find lost Gonker.

I would rate Dog Gone a 4.8 because this is based off a true story and when movies are based off a true story it can be sad and heartwarming, this movie is a must watch for dog lovers and people who love the bond between dog and man. Fielding in the movie shows that he would give his life to find Gonker (literally he almost died trying to find his bud!) Dog Gone shows the compassion between dog and man, the adventures and everything in between. It is a must watch!
