Coffee

Have you ever had a morning where you could barely think because you were SO tired? Well, I have a solution to that. It’s called coffee. It is this amazing drink that has this magical substance called caffeine. Coffee has many flavors, it can be made in many different ways, and lastly, it is delicious!

Shanda Sims, a teacher here at EJHS, says, “I like coffee more, because in the morning, when I get it, the first taste wakes me up. I like the coffee tartness, I guess.” I can completely understand that, because coffee is a bitter drink, but having it combined with creamer, which makes it sweet, gives it a really strong taste. People who have had coffee with creamer know exactly what I’m talking about. However, not everyone likes that taste, which again, I can completely understand.

Caffeine, as you should know by now, is a substance that makes you very energetic. It blocks sleep-promoting receptors in your brain, which are known as adenosine (ad-en-oh-seen) receptors. This wakes you up. Now, I know that this might not help you with your opinion on how coffee is superior to hot chocolate, but at least now you know how caffeine works!

“I like coffee more, because one, It gives you energy, and two, it can taste exactly like hot chocolate.” Ona Terrell states. There are many flavors of coffee. The most popular of them are, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Mocha, Carmel, Pumpkin Spice, Peppermint, and Cinnamon. That is why Terrell made the point that it can taste exactly like hot chocolate.

There are a lot of myths that are associated with coffee. For example, it can stunt someone's growth. Well, I am here to tell you that it is not true. It comes from a common fallacy that coffee causes osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a genetic disease that weakens your bones. But that isn’t true, because what actually causes osteoporosis is smoking, combined with the estrogen levels in your bones. Also, as I said before, genetics. Coffee has nothing to do with estrogen, smoking, or genetics (well, maybe your great, great, grandmother really liked coffee, so she passed it down, but still, that doesn’t cause osteoporosis.)

There are also many kinds of ways to make coffee. A few kinds are French press, espresso, cappuccino, and a latte. A French press is a machine that presses the coffee beans down with the water, and gets all of the flavor of the beans out, but as well as keeping the beans from getting into the drink. An espresso is a heavier version of a latte. It has more caffeine. A cappuccino is basically a latte, but the proportion is different. A latte is coffee with steamed milk, milk foam, and a little bit of espresso.
