Veterans Day Program

Veterans Day is coming up soon and we are here to talk about it. Veterans Day is November 11th. On Veterans Day, we celebrate the 19 million soldiers that serve or served in the armed forces. There were 60 million people who fought for our country in World War I, and  according to historyonthenet.com, there were 116,708 brave soldiers around the world who lost their lives fighting for national freedom.

The Edgewood Junior high school is hosting a Veterans Day program on November 11th. There will be speeches and poems from Mr. Sieglin, Mr. Pogue, and a few student council members. In this program, we will invite any students’ parents or siblings that are serving or have served in the armed forces. We will have a time where we ask all military members to stand up, so we can acknowledge the great acts of bravery they did for our country.

Do you know why we celebrate Veterans Day? We celebrate Veterans Day because it is a time to honor military soldiers that fought for many countries in World War I. Veterans Day is on the anniversary of when peace was declared, after World War I was over. Here’s a fun fact that you may not know about Veterans Day, Veterans Day used to be called Armistice Day. Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day on June 1st, 1954.

Lastly, we have a quote from Josh Baugh, a former Army soldier, who fought in Iraq; and when asked the question, “Why did you join the Army?” responded with “I joined because I felt like I could help make a difference in the world. I also wanted to take the pressure off my parents to pay for college.”

Veterans Day is an important holiday that we should all take time to recognize. There are so many soldiers that have given their lives to fight for the country we live in. We hope to see many military soldiers at our program, so we can all celebrate together as a country.
