Halloween Creatures and Their Origins

By: Ian Owen And Hutch Hancock

The spine-chilling creatures of Halloween are quite interesting and fascinating, so here are some facts and origins.                           Zombies are a creature that originated in Haiti and have an interesting history. Zombie is actually said zonbi in Haitian, and it was first recorded in 1819. It meant a corpse reanimated by some kind of magic, usually voodoo or black magic. The zombies that you see in movies today are not what they originated from, but they are what they have become today. Zombies are a staple of movies today. But just remember, they are not what they were in the beginning.

Aliens are popular in movies also, just like the zombies. But this type of monster varies from movie to movie. They are in very popular movies such as Alien and Predator and are usually what you would think of when you think of when the word "aliens" is said. But alien is a french word coming from alienus, which means "belonging to another." This explains why we think they are from other planets.

The legend of the Headless Horseman originated in Sleepy Hollow, New York. The Headless Horseman is a fictional character that originated from the story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. The Headless Horseman is also known as the Headless Hessian of the Hollow. Folklore says that the Headless Horseman was a Hessian trooper that was killed in 1776. He was supposedly decapitated by a cannonball. After a while, he got buried in the graveyard of the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow. He, in stories, furiously seeks for his lost head and has a Jack-o’-Lantern for a temporary replacement.

Frankenstein’s Monster is a fictional character that came from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel “Frankenstein." In the novel, Victor Frankenstein constructs the creature in his laboratory through a method based on a scientific principle he found. The monster is described as 8 feet tall and very hideous. The monster tries to fit into human society but is avoided. He eventually seeks revenge against Frankenstein by killing Victor’s brother, best friend, and eventually, Victor’s bride.

Researching these creatures and stories was really fun and I hope you enjoyed reading this.
