Is Halloween better than Thanksgiving?

By: Alana Armstrong

We all know about the turkey on Thanksgiving and dressing up for Halloween, but have you ever wondered which desired holiday is better? When you think of Halloween, you think of kids running around the neighborhood carrying a bucket of candy around laughing and trick or treating with their friends and/or family. However when you think of Thanksgiving you think of a small gathering with usually just your family eating a meal and maybe watching a parade. I believe that Halloween is better. Firstly, because it is more fun. Secondly, it inspires kids to be more creative.

Halloween is so much more fun than Thanksgiving. Halloween has so many more fun activities to do during the holiday. There are usually a lot of different events held in towns during the holiday for you to enjoy, plus there are always some fun Halloween treats. Alexa Smith, an EJHS student states, “I love Halloween with all my heart, it’s one of my favorite holidays! I love getting candy and going trick or treating with my friends!” Halloween is a very popular holiday around the world. According to Statista, Halloween is a widely celebrated tradition in the United States, with around 70 percent of Americans planning to participate in Halloween celebrations in 2023. Kids get really excited to walk around the town and trick or treat. Thanksgiving just doesn’t compare to the fun holiday. A lot of people would prefer Halloween over Thanksgiving. According to prnewswire.com, among Millennials, Halloween overtakes Thanksgiving for the second spot on the list. This shows that Halloween is the more enjoyable Holiday, and what’s not to love about Halloween? There’s candy, friends, and family involved. But Thanksgiving only has food, family, and turkeys!

Halloween allows kids to be more creative. According to U.S. News & World Report, 47% of Americans plan to do costumes themselves. Most kids get really excited about getting costumes for Halloween. In a google form, 37.5 percent of kids in Mr. Anspaugh’s journalism class agree that Halloween is better. It is such a fun holiday for kids. Halloween gives kids a lot of inspiration to get creative by making their own costumes. Kids make costumes ranging from dragons to princesses. Children are also able to do fun activities  like pumpkin carving to express their artistic side. Eleanor Mcelroy, a student at EJHS says, “I enjoy getting candy and eating it.” Kids of all ages participate in Halloween. The holiday really helps kids to develop and have fun! According to Gitnux, it is estimated that 148 million Americans celebrate it each year. Halloween has so much more to offer. It is sure to be a lot of fun for people all around the world.

For all of these reasons, I think Halloween is better than Thanksgiving. Firstly, it is more fun. Secondly, it lets kids be more creative. Halloween has so many more fun activities to do with friends and family. While Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy, Halloween is more exciting because it allows kids to be creative and have a good time! Are you going to trick or treat this year?
