Candy Corn has been a Halloween candy since the 1880s, But there are a lot of different opinions on it. Some think that candy corn is great while others think it's awful. “I think candy corn is really good and it may seem overrated, but it’s really not.” Says Ella Johnson, an 8th grader at EJHS.

The History of Candy Corn

Candy Corn was created around the 1880s by George Renninger, an employee at the Wunderle Candy Company. The Wunderle Candy Company was the first to sell candy corn but it was the Jelly Belly Candy Company who really made candy corn popular.

When it first came out it was called “Chicken Feed” It was called that because most people didn’t really think of corn as “people food.” Even after World War 1, candy corn remained associated with chickens. The packages of candy corn from the 1920s were sold with the image of a rooster and the motto, “King of the Candy Corn Fields.” As candy became more associated with Halloween, Candy Corn became the “Halloween Candy”. During the fall Candy Corn would be advertised more and sold more than other candies. It is still easy to buy candy corn throughout the year but it is the most sold in October, closer to Halloween.
