Isla Baker is a student-athlete here at Edgewood Junior High School. She has ran all three years of cross country, and plans on running her third year of track. Isla, Is one of the fastest girls that are on the Edgewood Junior High Cross country team, and plans to do cross country in high school, as well.
During Isla’s 6th grade year of cross country, she was in a walking boot, which is the reason why she only ran three cross country meets in 6th grade. But, in the three meets she ran, her PR for 6th grade is 14:56 I asked Isla how she thinks her 7th grade XC season went and she said, "Amazing, because in 6th grade I had a boot and pneumonia, but in 7th grade I started running with Payton Connelley, and at my first meet I was right behind her.” So, that just shows how much someone can grow, and get better in only one year.” Her PR for 7th grade was 11:55 at the Rick Weinheimer XC meet. Isla’s 8th-grade XC season is not over yet, but her best so far 12:43.0. Isla ran track in 6th and 7th grade, and she plans to do it again in 8th grade.

Mrs. Musselwhite said, “Over the last three years, her progress han’t just come from physical workouts, it’s come from her growth and maturity as an athlete. She continues to listen to her body, and be patient, she also has done well with understanding proper recovery and pacing and making sure that she is putting forth the effort that workouts require. And we expect that to continue.” That just shows how hard Isla works as an athlete, and also how she has gotten better throughout her three years of running cross country. To start off, in 6th grade, Isla couldn’t run that many cross country meet because of her injury. But, that didn’t stop her from coming back better, and faster her 7th grade year of cross country.
Then, in 7th grade, she recovered from her injury and was placing in the top 5 at almost every cross country meet she ran in. Isla says that some of her accomplishments were, “Being able to keep the same pace as Payton Connelley, and even being able to pass her in some track meets as well.” Isla's 8th grade cross country season is slowly coming to an end, but she is just as excited for her 8th grade track season to start in the spring.
In high school, Isla is planning to possibly do the 2400, 3200, and Isla also wants to do the 4x8 relay as well. Mrs. Musselwhite said, “Isla is fairly quiet, but does lead and tries to always be improving in her attitude and effort and is a good teammate who knows the value of a strong team. She shows up and does the work, even when she doesn't feel like it. She knows parts of practice are easy or fun, but knows there are parts that she needs to be focused and on target. I think she will continue to learn how to committ to the process.” That just shows that even when you don’t really feel like doing something, you should still do it anyway.
