The popular Build-A-Bear company has gone through a long journey. With the company having well over 2,000 plushies that you can make, and how they can actually hug you and have life, Build-A-Bear has really evolved throughout the years and here is how.

Build-A-Bear was founded in 1997 inside the Saint Louis Galleria Mall. It was created by founder and former CEO, Maxine Clark. In an article published by Medill REPORTS Chicago, Clark stated she knew she was on to something “when there was a line around the corner with parents and children waiting to be the inaugural customers.”
Build-A-Bear is known for being one of the most popular toy-making companies ever. There are over 500 Build-A-Bears in the world right now. The company is a nearly 30 year-old toymaking company. According to CNN, “The toy company’s revenue grew 11% in the second quarter to a record $124.2 million, and it even raised full-year guidance – all while mitigating the cost of tariffs.”
We have a Build-A-Bear here in Bloomington at the College Mall. Kelly is a long-time employee and manager there. Kelly said her favorite part of working at Build-A-Bear is “the interaction with folks and the new Bears we get all the time.” She particularly likes their new summer plushies, which include a colorful Pelican. When asked about her favorite experiences at Build-A-Bear, Kelly stated “customers want to have fun when they’re in the workshop and we want to be able to talk to people and ask them why they came in.” Kelly enjoys Build-A-Bear so much that she has continued to work there for 16 years. She said she really enjoys “traveling to the warehouse to see all the new products.” She’s hopeful that she will be sent to the new Build-A-Bear workshop opening in ICON Park near Universal Studios this summer. This workshop is predicted to be the largest one in the world.

The Build-A-Bear company is known for being an interactive teddy bear experience and it quickly has made its way to becoming one of the most popular interactive places ever. In addition to being able to select from a wide variety of plushies, being able to name your plushie and pick different outfits makes it an even more special experience.

Build-A-Bear has benefited from something called “kidulting.” Kidulting is where adults want to go back to experiencing the things that brought them happiness as kids, so they buy things they enjoyed as kids. Because of that, Build-A-Bear created “ The Bear Cave.” According to Explore St. Louis The Bear Cave is an online website to purchase specially designed and created plushies for adults. It “is an age-gated microsite filled with unexpected collaborations and unique toys.”
Overall, Build-A-Bear has had a pretty successful history and it has enhanced the lives of so many kids in the world. It is still recognized for its fanbase of children and is known for being one of the most popular toy companies in the country.
