One of the concepts I feel most compelled to utilize when making art is the duality humans find in our own bodies. The body offers to us our most innate sources of comfort. We use it to create bonds and connections, its mechanisms working constantly to keep itself working and provide an efficient system in which our selves can live, it keeps us present. Despite, or possibly because of the dependence and comfort we find in the body, it can also be a major source of disturbance in our lives. It can be warped and distorted in ways that we find disgusting and disturbing. We may create this distortion in our minds, or others may show it to us. I find that imagery of the human body is always most effective when trying to create unsettling artwork because of the conflicting emotions that it illicits. Our bodies are one of the most important things for us to come to terms with and see objectively, and recognizing the often fluctuating and contradictory thoughts and emotions we hold to the body is the first step to realizing what it truly is.
To my teachers and peers, thank you making my high school experience the best I could have imagined.
To my closest friends, you make my world a beautiful place in which to live, thank you for allowing me to be involved in yours.
Dear class of 2021,
You are entering your last year of high school! What is most important throughout this final year is to keep pushing as much as you are able the whole way through. All throughout my senior year I pushed my work off to the very last minute, and it became a huge source of stress in my life. You can make your life so much easier if you just keep working as efficiently as possible as long as it doesn’t negatively affect the integrity of your work.
Make sure you are actively pursuing feedback and criticism on your art! It is good to make art for yourself without concern for whether it pleases others, but hearing and absorbing other people’s thoughts on your art will bring new perspectives, and may help you better communicate what you were intending to with your art, and help you build your skills.
Stay focused, and keep pushing! This is completely doable, and you will get through!
