For my senior piece I decided to work on portraiture. The reasoning behind this decision is because much of my work consisted of portraiture and figure drawings when I entered Dreyfoos, and I wanted to pay homage to the emphasis put on figure drawing in the initial years of my arts education. The process of this portrait was particularly interesting due to the fact that the setting of the piece completely changed as a result of the recent outbreak of Covid-19. I originally completed the foreground before school was canceled, but I was forced to improvise with the situation and depict the background elsewhere because I no longer had access to school facilities. So, I depicted my bedroom as the background instead. This taught me how to be more flexible in terms of my art-making process, and allowed me to work in a more experimental manner than usual.

If I were to restart my Senior year at Dreyfoos, one thing I would advise myself to not get into the habit of is skipping classes; you’re bound to get caught once, likely in the most susceptible way. However, that may be more of a personal dilemma... The main piece of advice I would give to anyone approaching their Senior year is to strive to acknowledge what is truly important in your daily life. Lots of people get caught up in insignificance and don't realize it until the opportunity is over. Make time to spend with others, and be more open to new experiences with different types of people. Also, becoming more dependent on yourself, and less on others is something you should aspire for. When it comes to college decisions, think for yourself. It's your life, not your parents, or anyone else who may pressure you into taking a certain path.
Sincerely,
Michael Kleban.
