Fabric, Thread, Gouache, and Gesso
4.5' x 2'
I wanted to make my piece more meaningful, right down to what it was made of: each square of fabric is made from traditional Indian garb I have worn throughout my life. Each one colourful, vibrant, and full of intricate designs. At first I thought they would clash, but they work together and mesh a unique canvas that represents my art. I was also able to learn how to sew through a painstaking process of hemming each square, and then sewing each square together by hand. And then painting layers of paint over the lattice fabric to depict the flowers of atropa belladonna, aconitum napellus, datura stramonium, and cicuta virosa. These poisonous plants are painted in bright colours juxtaposing the poisonous plants, and even though I will not pursue art as a career this piece brought me closer to the true meaning of my art. I explore what I can depict allowing me to express my thoughts into an image, which others can see.
The one thing I truly regret from this experience was out of my hands. I wish we could have finished our Senior year with a loud splash, but sadly other circumstances prevented us from being able to. I am truly lucky to have gone to a school where each class was full of people I enjoyed being around. Every day felt like a party, one that I never wanted to walk away from. Now it's time to move on, but I know each one of us will be successful. Maybe if we meet ten years from now in front of a gas station, we can grab a coffee and not awkwardly try to avoid each other. I'd really like that. Cheers to our teenage years!!
Being able to make art, friends, and experience this one of a kind school is one thing in life that I will never regret. And I will always remember my greatest and worst moments at school. These have shaped me to become a better person, and I wish that every student will be able to learn from their mistakes. I'm still learning, but if there is one thing I can tell you all, it is to persevere. Thank you Ms.Jahn, Ms.Van Reeth, and all the other academic and vigital department teachers for your guidance. Seniors, even though I know you probably will do these things: Please don’t procrastinate, do your work, participate in every event possible (no matter how cheesy or cliche they are), and enjoy being at school. You can make every day a good day, no matter what else is happening.
Best of Luck,
Aarthi
