My piece is about growing up in Florida. Known for basically being the sludge melting pot of America, Florida is home to some of the wildest stories that pertain to all things that fascinate me like race, age, politics and more. Florida also includes a dark side of drugs and alcohol abuse with a string of mental illness that runs through it. Nearly all my friends in this book have struggled with one Floridian issue to the other. Throughout the years I have snapped photos of my friends and of the sunshine state itself and over the years I never knew what to do with them until I realized this common theme that goes throughout all the photos. The Florida sunshine is apparent in everything even as I document this book it is visible in its effects, illuminating everything in reachable sight. Under this Florida sunshine the best and the worst of things occur. Some of the better things include plant life that I have collected from various road trips over the past few years in the state. To keep a positive overtone to the piece all drug and alcohol related things are very loosely referenced in the glitter alluding to the HBO show Euphoria that utilizes the sparkle to symbolize the feeling of the side effects of popular intoxicants in the teenage age group. To reflect the array of life in south Florida an array of colors were used. To reflect the landscape layers and layers were added to be reminiscent of the forest floors like those in Jupiter and Loxahatchee. And finally just like the Florida buildings the flowers and leaves within the pages of the book match the color scheme of the page like homes in Key West.
I have noticed over the years how beautiful our collections of work look all together and I was growing scared of the day they would cease to collide. Through years of extremely hard work we have come to be a full range of artistic skills and ability. From our youngin' days learning why we had to follow certain rules only to then go on and break them. It is like we took pages our of art history and made a paper airplane out of the scraps. We as a class have always found a way to overcome hardships both big, small, academic, and especially domestic We as a class were able to go bed and get up the next day ready to fight and work even harder than ever before.Since then I have learned that the reason we looked so marvelous to begin with was because of the wild possibilities and connections we made in our own artworks as individuals.
I would like to especially thank Ava, Michelle, Lindsey, Mia, Julianna, Natalia, Emma, and Amanda without these beautiful and intelligent ladies I am unsure of where I'd be as an artist and as a woman in society today
I have tried to come up with a beautiful, long, extensive list of things to prepare you for but there is no need for that. To this upcoming class I wish you all more than the best on any excursion you so choose. I hope that with each night you can rest easy and each morning you rise to be better than before. I hope that you find your niche whether it be in the arts or any field. Be sure that YOU are doing your best. It truly comes down to you and your will power which will withstand more than just an assignment on google classroom or jury or exam. YOU must put YOUR all into everything you do. Without this your work will reflect. Be the polished prism in the rough. Love you all dearly - Yanis
