Acrylic Paint, Dried Flowers, Magazine Cutouts, Photographs
13.5" x 15.5"
For my senior piece, I knew I wanted to create something that included flowers, because they have always been one of my favorite subject matters. My original concept was to involve printmaking. I had really enjoyed linocuts at the beginning of the year, and wanted to try doing a more advanced piece with this process. I began a collage of flowers, but halfway through, I had to modify my idea. I no longer had access to the tools needed to create this piece when I wasn’t attending school. I continued with a floral collage but, instead, combined a mixture of dried flowers, paintings, and magazine cutouts collaged into a floating picture frame. Since Victorian times, floral arrangements have been a form of communication and a way to express feelings. This is known as floriography, or the ‘language of flowers’. The colors that stand out most in my piece are pink, purple, and white. I wanted to create a piece that has uplifting symbolism behind it, and one meaning behind pink flowers is happiness. Along with this, purple symbolizes success and accomplishment and white flowers symbolize humility and elegance. Creating art has brought a sense of peace and encouragement to me, especially during these difficult times, and my senior piece will always be a reminder of the pandemic and the end of my high school experience.
I’m glad I was able to spend my high school experience with all of you. You've all impacted me in some way, shape, or form and I'm so appreciative for every interaction, whether it be positive or negative, that has helped me grow as a person.
Thank you to my best friends for always being there for me no matter what. I will miss not spending everyday with you next year. I love you all <3
And lastly, thank you to Ms. Jahn, and the rest of the visual arts department for always guiding and encouraging me in my artistic endeavors and giving me a deeper appreciation for art.
Thanks Dreyfoos for a great 3.75 years,
Amber
