Falls-Lenox Primary School Newsletter
September 1, 2023
Dear Falls-Lenox Families,
This week, students partcipated in Student Engagement Assemblies where they learned about our PBIS building-wide expectations (Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Kind), and the various student club opportunities available at Falls-Lenox. If your child is interested in signing up for Terrific Kids, the sign-up link is below! We also had our first practice fire drill this week.
Next week, students will be begin taking the Map Test (Map stands for Measure of Academic Progress) for Reading, with Math being adminstered the following week. Students take the Map Test on a Chromebook, and the assessment measures both achievement and growth and provides teachers with detailed information that they use to inform instruction. The Map Test is administered three times per year (fall, winter, spring) and reports will be emailed home to families. Teachers are also in the process of administering a Foundational Reading Diagnostic Assessment (first graders) and the D.R.A. (Developmental Reading Assessment - 2nd and 3rd graders). These reading assessments are administered one-on-one with each child. These assessments allows the teacher to observe the child reading and note areas of strength and need.
Just a friendly reminder that if you are dropping off your child in the morning, the side door opens at 7:35 and closes at 7:55 a.m. If you are dropping off your child after 7:55 a.m., please drop off in the front of the building. Also, if you child will be eating breakfast at school, please drop him/her off by 7:45 a.m. to allow time to eat. We ask that all students are in their classrooms and ready to start learning by 8:00 a.m.! If there is a change to your child's afternoon transportation, please send your child to school with a hand written note (we do not accept e-mails, faxes, or phone calls for changes in transportation).

Beginning of the Year Book
Our beginning of the year book is "The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be" by Joanna Gaines. Classroom teachers will be reading and discussing the book with students. The book follows a group of children as they each build their very own hot-air balloons. As the kids work together, leaning into their own skills and processes to fill the sky with beautiful colors, we discover that the same is true for life — it’s more beautiful and vibrant when our differences are celebrated. Says the author, “I hope that you know and love who you are for all of the beautiful and unique and magical gifts you have to offer to the world. May you always look at life with your eyes wide open. Be quick to learn from others and see and celebrate the differences in all of humanity.” Together with Joanna, kids will take a journey of growth and imagination as they learn in full color that:
We should celebrate every child’s one-of-a-kind strengths, teamwork and accept everyone’s differences.
Everything can be made more beautiful when we share our talents and abilities.
We should lend a helping hand and do our best to take care of one another.
After listening to the story, students will be creating their own hot air balloons aligned with the story. Look for pictures in an upcoming newsletter!
