For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with a dataset that represents the meat consumption by country, and I focused beef and pig consumption in 2023.
I decided to work with this dataset because I thought it would be interesting, given that different countries have different conceptions about eating meat, some don't allow it but some love it.
In my visualization, the data is represented as dots on a world map, and if you hover over them, it shows you the average kg of beef/pig per person.
To interact with the visualization, try hovering over the dots, and click the button to switch between pig and beef.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is some small countries have unexpectedly high meat consumption rates, whereas some big countries have very little, because you are not allowed to eat meat.
Something I still wonder about is some of the countries that don't allow meat in their religions have very small numbers, like 0.5 - are those people eating meat going against the rules?
The most challenging moment of this project was probably uploading all of the data and cleaning all of it, because I had to change around the order of the latitudes and longitudes and I also had to do it to two datasets.Â
If I had more time, I would like to add more types of meat, so you could see multiple types of meat and their consumption rates.
My proudest moment during this project was when I got all of the colors to work when you clicked the button because that was something that was bugging me so when I fixed it I was very happy.
