For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with a data set about the frequency of droughts around the world. This data is from The Emergency Events Database.
I decided to work with this dataset because I have been affected by droughts before, and thought it would be interesting to look at how bad they are around the world.
In my visualization, the data is represented as red dots on the map, coordinated to the latitude and longitude of each country.
To interact with the visualization, try hovering over the dots.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is that countries closer to the equator have experienced more droughts from 1980-2022 than countries farther from the equator.
Something I still wonder about is why some countries like Japan and Finland were not included in the data set, as they have also had droughts in the time span it is showing.
The most challenging moment of this project was getting the basics to work.
If I had more time, I would like to make it more asthetically pleasing and add a slider for years (1980-2022) showing when exactly the droughts happened.
My proudest moment during this project was when I actually got the basic code to work. đź’€
