For my final data visualization project, I looked at a data set of emissons produced by different foods. Some of those were direct animal products like meats and others were plant products, but there were also some animal products like eggs and milk which are less direct than the meat of an animal itself.
I decided to work with this dataset because I wanted to see how much of a different it makes to be vegan/vegetarian and what affect animal products have on the environment.
In my visualization, the data is represented as small dots, in which the size is represented by the amount of visualization.
To interact with the visualization, try hovering over the dots and seeing the emission rates and what food it is.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is meat actually does make a very large impact emission-wise. All the direct meat products had a lot more emissions than every other one, most notably "Lamb and Mutton" being at the top.
Something I still wonder about is what goes into production of plant-based products and if that's worse than animal products themselves. A lot of water goes into plant products and you have to kill a lot of other things to protect your crops, so I still don't know if being vegan is really worth it.
The most challenging moment of this project was incorporating my data. I didn't really know how to show it for a little but it works alright now.
If I had more time, I would like to explain the data points a little more and maybe make it more interactive, as it's pretty simple right now.
My proudest moment during this project was when I was stuck on what I was gonna represent it with and I chose to use dots with the size representing the amount of emissions and the color representing what type of product it is. This shows my point well.
