For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with Pokemon statistics data.
I decided to work with this dataset because I am a huge fan of Pokemon, and I thought it could be both fun to see the data, and useful to create a filter that could help me find the best competitive battlers.
In my visualization, the data is represented as the dots across the screen. Each dot represents a single Pokemon upto the gen 7 dex (Alola).
To interact with the visualization, try typing in some minimum stat values, and choosing the X and Y axis (attack, defense, and base total). Also, put your mouse over a dot to read all of the Pokemons base stats!
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is most of the time, the same Pokemon remain at the top not mater what you choose to filter. There are a few exeptions, however, those were few and far between.
Something I still wonder about is how the filtering of abilities, and movepools would futher narrow down choices as a competitive battler, along with matching Pokemon to items. While the filter above is great at helping pick out Pokemon on stats alone, often you'll find that there are Pokemon in competitive battle that don't need high base stat totals as their movepools are incredible, they have an overpowered ability, or they match well with an item.
The most challenging moment of this project was working through some of the Javascript issues I faced. There were some occasions where everything looked perfect, but still wouldn't work as I forgot to multiply a variable by 1, and those issues would often lead to frustration.
If I had more time, I would like to attempt to incoperate abilities, moves, and items into my filter, as they would provide an even better idea of which Pokemon would be best in certain situations.
My proudest moment during this project was when I got the text insert to work. I was happy to see that I could properly filter out Pokemon depending on their stat totals.
