The Data Set

I chose to work with the meat consumption data set published by the OECD.

Dataset Notes

This indicator is presented for beef and veal, pig, poultry, and sheep. Meat consumption is measured in thousand tonnes of carcass weight (except for poultry expressed as ready to cook weight) and in kilograms of retail weight per capita. Carcass weight to retail weight conversion factors are: 0.7 for beef and veal, 0.78 for pigmeat, and 0.88 for both sheep meat and poultry meat.

THE Visualization

I visualized the dataset on a map with the color of the country symbolizing the meat consumption. You can try changing the time, the type of meat and hovering over the countries.

MY OBSERVATIONS

One interesting thing I noticed during this project is that lamb is significantly less consumed overall and more concentrated, and poultry is significantly more consumed overall and very widespread.

MY PROCESS

The most challenging moment of this project was learning how to use d3.

If I had more time, I would like to use the extended dataset with data back to 1990, I didn't realize it existed when I started this project.

My proudest moment during this project was when I got a simple choropleth map working with d3.
