About 230 km north of Ahmedabad is situated the city of Patan, it was capital of Gujarat in medieval times. Currently, Patan is famous for its architectural remains( like: Rani -Ni -Vav , Sahatraling temple) and the double ikkhat patola, dyeing and weaving craft.

Population: 1.34 Lakhs according to the 2011 census.

Major craft of the region: Double Ikkhat Patola

Why Patan?

To understand the scenario of a famous handicraft, within a less popular sub region. With the presence of Kutch in the region, we wanted to understand the tourism scenario in craft clusters of other towns.

Other noticeable factors about Patan:

Besides Double Ikkhat Patola there are multiple crafts practiced in this town, some of them being: paper carving, pottery, clay toy making, traditional jewelry making, masroo silk weaving, wood carving, etc

Patan is also famous for its history, heritage and culture. Availability of architectural tourist attractions like Rani -ki -Vav, Sahastraling temple, Kali temple, etc.

The Double Ikkhat Patola has been registered under the Geographical Indicator thus attaining a fair share of recognition on National and International platforms.

This is one of the most important factors within the Tourism scenario and also one of the factors to understand what brings the Craft Enthusiasts all around the globe to this region, (also to understand the advantages and disadvantages of monopoly of a single craft).
