Tucked away in the outskirts of Ahmedabad, Sarkhej has a 200 family cluster of the Pottery craft. This cluster is said to have settled here around a lake (that has now dried up). The Potters would source mitti from the floor of this lake to create utensils, tableware, toys and articles for festivals.

We visited the home of Bhagwan Bhai who has been doing pottery since 40 years. Along with this father (photo on the left), Bhagwan Bhai takes up bulk orders from various sellers across Ahmedabad. He chose not to teach the craft to his only son who is now on his way to bag a CA degree.

With skilful hands, Bhagwan bhai moulded atleast 100 kulhads in front of us while we talked to him. His unfaltering hands moved on the potter's wheel like clockwork.
