The Health Information Portability and Accountability of Act of 1996 is a federal law dealing with privacy and security of health information.
It is Northeast Iowa Community College’s responsibility to provide HIPAA Awareness training for nursing and allied health students and clinical faculty. Nursing and Allied Health students are required to complete HIPAA Awareness training prior to their first clinical course. Clinical faculty are required to complete HIPAA Awareness training annually. Violation of confidentiality guidelines, outlined in this training, is a critical incident and grounds for discipline up to and including termination from the program or employment with the college.
