The Workload Guidelines are aligned with the Iowa Faculty Load as defined the Iowa Code 281.24.5 and the HEA CTE contact hour agreement.
Arts and Science faculty are credentialed to teach the teach the transfer level general education courses and receive a workload based upon credit hours taught. Credits are defined by the Department of Education (Iowa Code, Chapter 21.2.12) and based upon four instructional methods; classroom work, laboratory work, clinical practice and work experience.
Career and technical faculty are credentialed to teach the career and technical courses. Career and technical faculty workloads are based upon the contact hour average taught over the contract year. Contact hours are the formal theory, lab, clinical, on-site work-based, and advising hours with students. One contact hour is equal to 55 minutes.
Prior to the start of the academic year, all faculty employed by the College shall have a yearly workload on file that provides the estimate of credit hours and contact hours for each faculty member. All faculty will receive a copy of their estimated yearly workload prior to the fall academic term. Faculty who have questions regarding their workload are asked to schedule a personal meeting with their dean. Workloads may be subject to change as a result of illness, class cancellations or additional assignment added to reach load.
Faculty workloads are established according to the Workload Guidelines, utilizing the workload template. A full-time contract is 173 days; 160 teaching days and 13 professional development days. Contracts may be extended with faculty approval. Assigned teaching (regardless of the hours) constitutes a teaching day. Additional specific role and responsibilities related to your teaching area, accreditation standards, and job description specific to hire can be clarified by your Dean.
