Grading

Faculty members may develop their own grading scales to use; however, the College has a suggested grading system outlined in the College catalog.  It is important to identify the grading procedures clearly in the syllabus for students and go over this process early in the class.  Students should clearly understand how they are being graded; any changes to the grading system once the class is in session need to be agreed upon and stated in writing to the students.  Issues such as late work, participation, make-up testing, etc., must be covered clearly in the syllabus, and students should be treated consistently to avoid concerns with capricious grading practices.  Extra credit is at the discretion of each individual instructor.  Grading based on attendance is not permissible; however, appropriate rigor, quizzes, and class activities can do much to curb poor attendance and ultimately can and should impact a grade.
