Early Alert Referral

Faculty are responsible for engagement and communication with students enrolled in their courses and play a key role in early identification of students who may be experiencing academic or other difficulties.

Faculty shall begin monitoring poor attendance or academic progress at the start of the semester. Ongoing assessment of student progress should continue throughout the course.

In the event that a faculty member identifies a student with academic or other concerns, the instructor will:

1. Discuss the concern(s) and strategies for improvement with the student, e.g., seeking assistance from the Learning Center or other College resources, usage of test taking strategies, completing reading and homework assignments, attendance, etc.

2. Initiate contact with student by phone or email if unable to contact on campus.

3. Complete the Early Alert Referral from MyCampus | Early Alert Referral or within the Brightspace Learning Management System under More Tools. The referral will document the reason(s) for the alert and what communication the faculty has had thus far with the student.

4. The completed Early Alert Referral will be received by Student Services staff for additional interventional outreach or referral to other support services.

5. Faculty who submit an Early Alert Referral will receive follow-up communication from the staff person who contacts the student which will include additional recommended strategies, dates of contacts/outreach, and results of the contact.
